Combining the messages in John 1:1, 14; Hebrews 4:12; Revelation 1:12-16; 19:11-16 . . . Jesus is identified as the Word of God. And the Word is described as “living” and as a “double-edged sword.” At end times, Jesus is pictured with a double-edged sword coming out of his mouth. As he thunders down on a white horse, clearly this sword is the only weapon needed to vanquish all the forces of the Dark Side. Jesus and the Word. A package deal. That’s spooky and cool.
All that power makes the Word understandably intimidating to certain people. I can see why they’d want to downplay the Word and push it aside. What I don’t understand are believers who don’t want to tap into that power, who don’t want their classes/small groups subjected to “too much Bible” but, instead, want to toss aside this double-edged sword to retain . . . what? . . . an unarmed/unintimidating version of Jesus? That’s spooky and not cool.
