“Ancient Christian practice.” This term is showing up in lots of Christian literature to get us to accept whatever “practice” is being described. The truth is that sometimes what’s being discussed isn’t an ancient Christian practice at all but, rather, an ancient PAGAN practice that some ancient Christians foolishly adopted. Trace the spiritual family trees of the authorities being referenced. If those authorities don’t accept the Scripture as ultimate truth; don’t believe the blood of Christ covers all sin; if they draw from other religions; if they try to contact the dead (including praying to dead people), levitate, and have erotic encounters with entities . . . then, uh, we might need to skip over them as legit teachers and, instead, learn about authentic ancient Christian practice from the New Testament.
